Behind the Scenes with Warren Milller’s Timeless presented by Volkswagon

Lisa Condit spoke with Caite Zeliff from Warren Miller’s Timeless presented by Volkswagon, coming to The Hanover Theatre and Conservatory for the Performing Arts on Friday, November 8 at 8pm. Read on for highlights from the interview or listen to the full interview below, then tune in to Saturdays at 1 PM for more behind-the-scenes interviews!

Lisa: You’re a New Englander who has grown up skiing here and you’ve become queen of your ski universe. You’ve been able to participate in these incredible world-class ski movies. What’s it like to be in one of these movies and to let the tradition continue?

Caite: Everything started for me in North Conway, New Hampshire. I grew up skiing at Cranmore Mountain Resort. That’s where I started getting involved with ski racing. I took my career to Proctor Academy in Andover, New Hampshire and Dartmouth Skiway, so lots of New Hampshire connections, and I skied for the University of New Hampshire. Then I moved out to Jackson, Wyoming and started competing in the big mountain world of free skiing and haven’t looked back since. I’m really grateful to be a part of Warren Miller Entertainment. I looked forward to these films each fall. It’s a dream come true to be involved in one.

Lisa: It’s a dream of a lot of local athletes to be able to reach the level that you’ve reached. What are some of the things that you’ve observed that help people or hold them back when trying to reach what we in the performing arts call artistry, or skill?

Caite: For me, consistency has really paid off. You can’t be too hard on yourself. There are going to be some lows, and you just have to keep moving on. It’s been a real roller coaster, but now I’m seeing all of my hard work pay off. Just keep plugging along. That’s the only advice I can give.

Lisa: People who enjoy Warren Miller’s amazing films come year after year. What can we look forward to seeing in Warren Miller’s Timeless?

Caite: This movie is the 70th anniversary of Warren Miller Entertainment, and now that Warren is no longer with us, it’s cool to see what the production company is doing with his legacy. This film is the next generation. It feels like the handing of the torch in this film, and I was lucky enough to ski along side Jackson locals who are up and comers. We’re all just trying to push the sport.

Lisa: It’s obvious that Warren Miller’s cinematography has helped to show the beauty of what avid skiers see in the wilderness when they push the limits. What impact would you say Warren Miller’s films have had on your sport?

Caite: Warren Miller films are always good at telling a story, diving deeper into the world of skiing or the skier. Warren Miller has more the feel of the coming of winter and the excitement that brings and the community of skiing. With all the craziness within the climate, I think it’s important to connect with nature. Skiing is one of those cool things where you can tell your story and be a part of it and enjoy the outdoors. That’s what Warren Miller is to me. It’s a welcoming atmosphere. It always feels inclusive and exciting. That fall time rush is a really spectacular thing.
